Chapter Five
As arranged, Cheryl went down to the phone box at the end of the street and dialled Carry Annâs phone number. It was just after mid-day and with the heat from the sun beating down, the stench of stale urine was even stronger than usual. Cheryl heard the click of the phone when it was picked up on the receiving end and someone taking a deep breath shortly before saying, hello. But this voice wasnât Carry Annâs as Cheryl was expecting.
âAllo, who is this?â she asked in a very strong French accent.
ââAve I just bleedinâ phoned France?â Cheryl asked herself out loud, holding the hand piece out in front of her and checking it out. She shook it vigorously and then tapped it with her long fingernails. âHello, hello, Iâ¦AMâ¦LOOKINGâ¦FORâ¦CARRYâ¦ANN,â she spoke slow and loud to make sure the other person could understand her.
âCarry Ann is here, I will get her for you,â the woman told her. âMon Cheri, thereâs a woman on the telephone for you.â
Carry Ann came running to the phone, she placed her hand over the mouth piece to avoid Cheryl hearing her conversation with Bernadette. Whispering she said, âWho is it?â
Bernadette replied, âI have no idea. The woman thinks that sheâs phoned France, though.â
âHello, can anybody hear me?â Cheryl shouted down into the mouth piece.
âCheryl, hello, itâs Carry Ann,â she spoke quietly.
âYeah, itâs me. How come Iâm phoning a French womanâs number?â
âOh that was Bernadette, didnât I tell you, sheâs French,â Carry Ann continued. âPerhaps if we spoke on Friday instead, it would be easier, I wasnât expecting Bernadette to be home this afternoon,â she whispered.
âNo I bleedinâ well canât. Why canât ya talk to me now? Did I do summat wrong?â
âOh, no! Not at all, itâs just right now really isnât a good time,â Carry Ann tried to convince Cheryl.
âWhy not?â
âI thought that sheâd be at work but she decided not to go in, please, Cheryl, donât make this harder for me than it already is.â
Cherylâs heart began to sink fast. She had been looking forwards to seeing Carry Ann and now her hopes had been dashed. âI thought we was gonna arrange an afternoon together and maybeâ¦â
âMaybe what? Cheryl? Cheryl? Are you still there?â Carry Ann asked, her voice trembling.
But Cheryl had already walked away leaving the handset dangling. She sauntered down the street, miserable and feeling lost, she paid little attention to any traffic driving by. With tears flowing down her cheeks and stained from her black mascara, her dress became spoiled as drips trickled onto the lace fabric.
She found herself helplessly wandering around in the park until she came to a large acorn tree where she sat herself down at the root of the tree trunk, resting her back up against the bark surface. Normally she would have paid attention to a squirrel running along the branches just above her but her thoughts were far away and focused on only one thing. âWhy had Carry Ann acted so callously?â
